This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, develop and improve a stock nutrition program for aquaculture. It includes the ability to assess nutritional requirements in a cost-effective manner, research process improvements, monitor the nutrition program and take corrective action when required

This unit applies to individuals who have technical and/or management responsibilities for stock in an aquaculture facility.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Determine daily and seasonal nutritional requirements of cultured or held stock from published data on species, research programs, historical records, industry practice and workplace procedures 
Research and identify benefits of mechanisation or automation of process or activity and the use of specialised contract services 
Develop a plan to ensure adequate nutrition is provided to achieve appropriate stock condition in line with workplace production plan 
Ensure plan responds to different nutrition requirements during a range of conditions over the growing cycle of stock 
Determine most cost-effective approach to apply required nutrients 
Research selected foods in nutrition plan to identify and minimise risk of adverse side effects on stock or stock culture or holding environment 
Document nutrition plan and communicate to supervisors and management 
Monitor implementation of program by stock-testing to ensure requirements of workplace production plan are achieved 
Monitor and review nutrition program to ensure it remains responsive to changing conditions 
Test new feeds or formulations and introduce into nutrition program in line with workplace practices 
Identify shortcomings in program and implement appropriate courses of action 
Document remedial action taken and report to management
